Most Thailand travelers have heard about Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket, but few venture to the northeast and head for the area know as Isaan. That is in the northeast and composed of Khon Kaen, Korat, Udorn Thani and the others.
That is largely a rural area with several rice plants. It is also the home of numerous retirees who've settled down using their Thai lady and have made this their new home.
I was in Korat twice during exercise Cobra Gold and just got to see this town fleetingly. Working 12 16 hour day didnt allow much time for sightseeing. But, I did observe that the price of living was a lot less-than greater tourist towns and individuals were a heck of a lot friendlier.

Khon Kaen is only a 55 minute trip from Bangkok departing from the old airport terminal Don Muang. The airport in Khon Kaen is extremely small and only has two departure gates.
The city is just a nice mixture of old and new. We'd venture out for lunch or dinner and sit in small bungalows along the river or one of the waters and dine in pure enjoyment. Three or four plates of some water, several beers and exemplary food and the bill could be about $10 - $15.
O-n the flip-side, there is also KFC, Pizza Company and other fast food places. Western influence at its worst.
Shopping again is really a mix of new and old. You can travel to the food market or the night market or head-to the Fairy mall or the electronics mall. From inexpensive T-shirts to current movies on DVD to bootleg computer software, Khon Kaen has it all.
I remained at a small hotel called Cactus Resort. It was in town but perhaps not in the heart. It would take us about 5-minutes to attend the mall or out to dinner. The buying price of the area was about $16 per night. The room was a decent size with satellite TV, free Internet, warm and cold running water with a bath, and ice box and large bed. Needless to say, the room was air-conditioned.
The staff was nice and helped me setup my computer to get into the World Wide Web using their IP. The maid even saw that I was drinking more than my allotted 2 free bottles of water and improved my free water to four bottles.
The hotel didnt have a restaurant, but there is one right next door. This is not problem for me as my girl would prepare my morning meal at her house and take it to me and pick me up some food for lunch. We would then head out every night for dinner and drinks. Khon Kaen is a very comfortable and cheap place to live. I intend to retire there and will be wanting to get a residence on my next visit.
