5 Tips To Help You Excel at Pilates

Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German anatomist. In developing his new discipline, Pilates drew inspiration from the traditional Eastern practice of yoga but focused more on strengthening and less on the spiritual aspect. Joseph Pilates eventually set up his first fitness studio in the same complex that housed the New York Ballet. His studio soon became popular with ballet dancers and actors, not only because of its proximity to the theater district but because it balanced flexibility with strengthening without adding bulk.

The discipline of Pilates has been popular ever since with people looking to lose weight, gain strength, and improve their overall health. As with most new skills, Pilates takes some time to learn and improve at, but with patience and dedication, you can achieve your goals. Here are some tips to help you get a good start on the path to achieving your fitness goals with Pilates.

1. Try Not To Be Self-Conscious

However, that does not mean that you cannot gain any mental benefits from Pilates. Like yoga, Pilates is a slower-paced discipline that requires deep focus and concentration. The breathing techniques involved in each have been shown to combat feelings of anxiety and stress, which is beneficial to overall mental health.

4. Breathe Deeply
Correct breathing technique is very important to get the most out of Pilates. Your instructor will explain how to breathe and cue you when to inhale and exhale. While breathing is important, it is okay if you do not practice the technique perfectly when you are first starting out. Like the other skills you are learning, it takes time to perfect it. The most important thing is just to keep the air flowing. Some people concentrate so hard on trying to perfect the poses that they forget to breathe, which is counterproductive.

5. Commit to the Process
To reap the benefits of Pilates, you must commit to it long term and practice it regularly. You should arrange a schedule and stick to it. Be honest to yourself about what you can commit to and don't push yourself too hard.

Many people who practice Pilates consistently find that they get "hooked" on it because of the health benefits it offers. Pilates is certainly a good habit to get into, but be sure to find balance by varying your training.
