Cincinnati Reds rookie right-hander Chase Burns, 21, has received the largest rookie contract in franchise history.
“The Reds have agreed to terms with right-handed starting pitcher Chase Burns, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft,” MLB.com announced today.
Burns, ranked No. 6 in MLB.com's draft prospect rankings, is a right-hander who played at Wake Forest University and is a fireballer who already topped 100 mph (160.9 km/h) in high school. He was already considered a possible first-round pick as a high schooler, but his commitment to college pushed him back to the 20th round, and he went to Wake Forest without signing with the Padres despite being drafted by San Diego.
“Burns is the No. 6 prospect in the country and the highest-ranked right-hander in the game,” MLB.com wrote. ”Burns started 16 games for Wake Forest this year, going 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA. He was named ACC Pitcher of the Year, was a finalist for the Golden Spike Award, and struck out 191 batters in 100 innings, the most of any collegiate pitcher.”
This season, Major League Baseball fans have been enthusiastic about rookie pitcher Paul Skins (Pittsburgh). The No. 1 overall pick in last year's First-Year Player Draft, Skins is 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA in 11 games (66⅓ innings) and is in the mix for National League Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award consideration. 파워볼사이트 The $9.2 million rookie contract he received when he joined Pittsburgh last year is the highest in the history of the draft slot money program.
Burns surpassed the Skins' rookie signing bonus record. MLB.com reports, “Burns, 21, signed a $9.25 million rookie contract, according to multiple sources. It's the highest ever for a first-round pick, surpassing the Skins' $9.2 million for last year's No. 1 overall pick. The slot money for this year's No. 2 pick is $9.79 million, while the Reds' highest-ever pick in 2023, the No. 7 overall pick, signed for $5.7 million.”
Cincinnati director of amateur scouting Joe Katuska said, “It's always a good feeling (to sign a rookie). Obviously, step one is scouting the player and step two is drafting him. But step three is the most important part. It's actually signing him, doing the physical, and putting pen to paper,” he said of the Burns signing.
“We'll get him on the field on Monday (22nd),” said Catusca, who added, ”The most important thing is to figure out where he's going to pitch. He still has some innings to go, but it's been a while since he's been on the mound in a real game. We're going to protect him with a long-term perspective and expectations.”
